Summary
The Adoption Health Department Associates work closely with the veterinarian to provide and coordinate medical care for the sick animals in the center, in foster homes, and recently adopted pets. All job duties support Providence Animal Center’s mission in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures, and with the safety of people and animals at the forefront of all activities. This job description should be taken as a general description of the responsibilities of the position. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
Accountability: The Adoption Health Department Associate reports to the AHD Assistant Manager and is a part time, non-exempt position.
Responsibilities
- Complete physical examinations for sick shelter animals and recently adopted animals; diagnose common diseases or illnesses found in a shelter setting, alerting the veterinarian as needed. Create and maintain patient records by accurately calculating mathematically for drug dosing and recording treatments on appropriate forms and entering examination details, treatment and test results into PetPoint software.
- Administer medications following the treatment plan.
- Provide all animals in assigned area with exercise, attention, affection, feeding, watering, mental stimulation and grooming. Clean and maintain animal housing, bedding, food/water dishes, and trash removal in assigned areas.
- Monitor health status of all animals in assigned area(s), reporting any concerns to immediate supervisor and/or staff veterinarian for evaluation in a timely fashion.
- Answer and return calls; schedule appointments for foster parents and recently adopted animals. Obtain relevant information and history from clients.
- Client education; inform clients of any pertinent medical information regarding the animals care, review treatment information and answer basic questions.
- Prepare and label medications to be sent home with the patient.
- Perform venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and drug and fluid calculations as directed by the veterinarian.
- Perform and interpret basic diagnostic tests including, but not limited to, fecal floatation, skin scrapes, heartworm test, FeLV/FIV tests, etc.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures such as urinalysis and blood counts (minimum database). Perform and analyze skin cytologies.
- Perform intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
- Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled substances.
- Performing and/or assisting with euthanasia.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and task satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Consistent and reliable ability to perform mathematical calculations for drug dosing.
- Animal handling experience in a shelter or veterinary hospital, preferred.
- Understand standard veterinary terminology, medical math, procedures and animal health issues.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills; professional telephone etiquette. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Able to create and interpret treatment sheets and administer treatment to patients.
- General knowledge of veterinary vaccination and preventative medications.
- Ability to interpret medical records to determine vaccination status and preventative care needs. Ability to effectively communicate medical information about the animal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Safely handle animals in accordance with the veterinarian and client needs to ensure proper care.
- Review vaccination records and prepare vaccines according to our vaccine protocol.
- Assist veterinarian during exams or treatments using proper restraint
- Assist veterinarian in performance of routine wellness procedures.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments prescribed by a veterinarian
- Trim nails, express anal glands, clean ears, draw blood and perform other routine procedures.
- Take vital signs of animals including temperature, pulse, and respiration.
- Collect/prepare blood, urine, and fecal samples for relevant testing
- Perform and analyze skin and ear cytologies
- Maintain and use medical equipment such as IDEXX Sedivue and centrifuge.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, feline leukemia tests and blood counts (minimum database).

- Clean and maintain animal housing, bedding, food/water dishes, and trash removal in assigned area to include Cattery, Cat Holding, Dog Holding, Nursery, and Puppy Holding rooms
- Administer wellness exams to all incoming animals. Wellness exams include necessary vaccinations and preventative care. Perform basic medical tasks such as nail trims, ear cleaning, drawing blood for feline combo testing and canine heartworm testing, microchipping, blacklighting, and skin scrapes
- Monitor health status of all animals in assigned area(s), writing vet request slips and/or reporting any pressing concerns to your immediate supervisor and/or staff veterinarian for evaluation in a timely fashion
- Accurately record and enter all medical information including exam, vaccines, medications, tests and results on the kennel card and into the adoptions database

- Assist with feline socialization and behavioral modification; record progress updates as appropriate

- Reception and veterinary/animal experience preferred but not necessary
- Full-time, approximately 40 hours a week.

Tasks/Major Responsibilities
