Providence Animal Center is thrilled to announce that world-renowned Dr. Gustavo Aguirre, board-certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist (DACVO), is now offering his expertise at Providence Animal Center! Dr. Aguirre will be seeing pet patients with eye problems in the Wellness Clinic. Additionally, he will provide guidance and care for PAC’s homeless cats and dogs with eye issues.
Dr. Aguirre’s Wellness Clinic hours are Tuesdays from 10AM-2PM and Thursdays from 10AM-1PM – appointment required. A portion of his service fees will be donated to Providence Animal Center in support of PAC’s lifesaving mission. An appointment is required for PAC's Wellness Clinic, including appointments with Dr. Aguirre. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Aguirre, the best method is via text message, at 610-566-1370.
Most recently, Dr. Aguirre was a professor of Medical Genetics and Ophthalmology at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania where he continues to carry out his research studies on inherited eye diseases and treatment.
In 2020, Dr. Aguirre was the recipient of the Sanford and Susan Greenberg End Blindness Outstanding Achievement Prize, which distinguishes scientists for their ground-breaking medical contributions to eradicate blindness. Dr. Aguirre’s internationally renowned research, generated over the course of 40+ years, has investigated the genetic basis of a variety of inherited vision disorders. Additionally, Dr. Aguirre is the 2019 recipient of the Inventor of the Year Award from the Penn Center for Innovation for his work in developing novel therapies for the treatment of inherited retinal disorders.
“The goal of my work is to identify the genetic causes of blindness and to hopefully cure blindness through gene therapies and other approaches,” Dr. Aguirre has said.
